Les Maîtres chanteurs de Nuremberg, la seule comédie musicale de Richard Wagner, sont peut-être son œuvre la plus complexe: L’histoire d’amour de Walther von Stolzing et Eva Pogner cache un triple message, philosophique (fortement marqué par l’influence de Schopenhauer), esthétique (la poétique de Hans Sachs) et politique (ayant trait à la vie sociale d’une ville allemande à la fin du moyen âge, et au nationalisme de l’Empire allemand). À l’occasion du bicentenaire de la naissance de Richard Wagner, ce volume réunit une douzaine d’études autour des Maîtres chanteurs, concernant le livret (ses sources, sa genèse, sa signification, les femmes dans la vie et l’œuvre de Wagner, son humour – ou l’absence du sens de l’humour chez lui), la musique (Bach et Wagner) et la réception (l’influence des Maîtres sur l’opéra-comique allemand, vues de la critique musicale en France, histoire des représentations dans les pays baltes, traductions scandinaves).


The Mastersingers from Nuremberg, Wagner’s only comedy in music, may well be his most complex work. The love-story between Walther von Stolzing and Eva Pogner does indeed conceal a triple message, philosophical (strongly marked by the influence of Schopenhauer), aesthetic (Hans Sachs’s poetics) and political (the social life of a German city in the late Middle-Ages, the issue of nationalism in the German empire). As part of the commemoration of the bicentennial of Richard Wagner’’s birth, this collection presents a dozen articles devoted to The Mastersingers, to its libretto (sources, genesis, meaning, the women in Wagner’s life, the composer’s humour or lack thereof), to its music (Bach and Wagner) and to its reception (the influence of the work on German comic opera, the views of musical criticism in France, the history of performances in the Baltic States, Scandinavian translations).
