Today, Jean-Georges Noverre still remains a «famous unknown», often quoted but seldom read. He is essentially referred to as a renowned  authority, the father of modern ballet, in accordance with the flattering legend he had forged himself. The bicentenary of his death was an opportunity to look at his life in a new light and to reappraise, in an unbiased way, the career, the works and the heritage of this major choreographer and classical dance theorist. Far from providing a hagiographic vision, this series of studies, carried out in an international and interdisciplinary environment and based on multiple and partly unpublished documents, shows the artist’s ambivalence and innermost weaknesses as well as the tragic side of his destiny. It also illustrates the utmost vitality of ballet, dance and stage arts, as well as the incomparably rich culture of the «siècle des lumières» in the whole of Europe.
