Recently discovered sketches owned by the Paul Sacher Foundation (Basel) give a far more detailed view of the process which led to the creation of Pierre Boulez's Le Marteau sans maître, one of the most significant musical masterworks of the twentieth century. This essay is completed by a few documents - most of them published for the first time - from the correspondence of Boulez and Stockhausen.
