This analysis tries to show that, in spite of a restricted vocabulary and an appearently clear structure, Elliott Carter's Oboe Quartet is a rich and complex chamber work which can be compared with the five string quartets by the quality of its inspiration. Without any real break, and with subtle but significant means, the work renews instrumental relations. It also evinces Carter's outstanding ability to change his musical discourse while maintaining a highly personal style.
