In 1793, the young Beethoven composed the opus 103 octet for the Court of Bonn. That work, exclusively written for wind instruments, is characterised by a fundamental unity that generates and balances the whole musical system. The analysis of the finale underlines the composer’s reliance on Chabanon’s classical aesthetics. It also allows us to demonstrate the relevance of Chabanon’s ideas on the independence of musical language : instead of merely imitating nature, music wields its own expressive power.
